According to USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study, only 2 percent of music producers and 3 percent of engineers/mixers across popular music are women.
To ignite industry-wide commitment to solving this severe inequality, Women in the Mix was launched in 2019.
Only 2% of proders and engineers are women. Let's work to change that.
The Initiative asks that at least two women are considered in the selection process every time a music producer or engineer is hired. It also asks working producers to agree to take issues of gender diversity within music’s technical fields into account when deciding who to mentor and hire for further development.
Expanding opportunities for female producers and engineers is not only right and fair, but it also benefits music and artists by broadening the talent pool to best match the needs of each project. Similarly, established female engineers and producers will inspire more young women and girls to pursue technical careers in the music industry and lessen the gender gap.

Below is a list of the founding employers, but the list has since grown to over 650. The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative is studying the data to monitor compliance to the pledge and results are included in their annual study of females in popular music.

Built in response to a workshop piloted in 2011 and initially developed at The Lower Eastside Girls Club in NYC, Beats By Girlz is designed to empower young women in music technology by providing them with the guidance, access, tools and role-support to develop their interest (and ultimately their ability to pursue career opportunities) in music production, composition, engineering, etc. The Beats By Girlz curriculum is available for licensing in schools and communities, regardless of classroom gender or gender balance. Gratis licenses will be given to schools who offer free or scholarship based programming to the communities. We also work with and support our direct partners who create their own Beats By Girlz chapters in their own communities.

Girls Make Beats (GMB) Incorporated is a nonprofit organization that empowers girls by expanding the female presence of DJs, Music Producers, and Audio Engineers.
